Hitmen open pre-season schedule with a loss

Regina, SK - Adam Berg snapped a 5-5 third period tie with 4:03 remaining to give the Regina Pats a 6-5 win over the Calgary Hitmen Friday night at Co-Operators Centre.

Greg Chase scored twice in the loss for the Hitmen who opened their six game WHL pre-season schedule.

Radel Fazleev, Jake Bean and Terrell Draude also scored for Calgary with Fazleev adding a pair of assists for a team leading three points.  Travis Sanheim and Elliott Peterson both chipped in pair of helpers for the Hitmen who opted for a young line-up, dressing only nine returning players from last season.

After falling behind 3-0, Calgary struck for five unanswered second period goals before the Pats bounced back in the third period.

The Hitmen carried most of the play outshooting Regina 43-20 but Daniel Wapple was strong for the Pats making 38 saves to record the win.  Mack Shields and Kyle Dumba split the Hitmen goaltending duties.

Calgary was 3-8 on the powerplay while Regina went 1-5.

The Hitmen are back on the ice tomorrow (Saturday) to wrap up the Regina tournament with a 3pm start against the Prince Albert Raiders.

The 72 game 2014-15 regular season schedule begins on Saturday, September 20 with the Home Opener against the Red Deer Rebels.  Game time is 7:00pm at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Hitmen roster down to 35; Pre-Season begins Friday in Regina

Calgary, AB – Calgary Hitmen Main Training Camp came to a close Tuesday night as Team Black beat Team White 4-1 in the annual intra-squad game at Max Bell Centre.

Goalies Ryan Rewerts and Evan Johnson combined to make 37 saves backstopping Team Black to victory.

Connor Rankin, Dawson Martin, Jordan Stallard and Dalton Gally all scored for Team Black while Pavel Karnaukhov had a pair of assists.

Michael Zipp had the lone goal for Team White.

Hitmen roster down to 48; Intra-Squad game Tuesday night

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club has trimmed their Main Camp roster from 62 players to 48.  They include 28 forwards, 15 defencemen and five goalies.

The moves come as the team prepares for tomorrow’s annual Calgary Hitmen Intra-Squad game at Max Bell Centre (1001 Barlow Trail SE).   The contest, which begins at 7pm, will feature several of the clubs NHL drafted prospects and will be will be hosted by the Calgary Canucks.  Adult tickets are $5.00, Child tickets are $2.00 with all proceeds supporting the Calgary Canucks Junior A Hockey team.

The Hitmen wrapped up their 2014 Main Camp scrimmages on Monday with three games at Don Hartman North East Sportsplex.  Each session consisted of a pair of 35 minute straight time periods with penalty shots replacing powerplays.  Below is a recap of each contest.

Game 1: Team Black 10 Team White 1
Colin Grannary had four points (2g,2a) to lead Team Black while Radel Fazleev (2g,1a), Beck Malenstyn (1g,2a) and Kenton Helgesen (3a) all had three points each.

Game 2: Team Red 5 Team Black 2
Pavel Karnaukhov had a goal and two assists for Team Red while Marshall Donald added a goal and an assist.  Ben Thomas was in on both goals for Team Black scoring once while setting up the other.

Game 3: Team White 8 Team Red 4
Terrell Draude scored twice to lead Team White’s scoring attack while Connor Rankin and Elliott Peterson both had a goal and an assist.  Travis Sanheim was the top point producer for Team Red with a goal and an assist.

Hitmen roster cut to 62; Main camp scrimmages continue Monday

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club opened the on-ice portion of their 2014 Main Camp on Sunday with four scrimmages at Don Hartman North East Sportsplex (5206 - 68 Street NE).  Each game consisted of a pair of 35 minute straight time periods with penalty shots replacing powerplays.  Below is a recap of each contest.

Game 1: Team White 8 Team Black 2
Pavel Karnaukhov, the club’s top pick in this summer’s CHL Import Draft, scored twice and set up another goal to lead Team White while Mason Mullaney added a goal and an assist.  Goaltender Kyle Dumba had a strong performance in relief for Team Black stopping 19 of 20 shots.

Game 2: Team Red 6 Team Grey 5
Adam Tambellini had a dominant outing for Team Red scoring once and adding four assists.  Taylor Sanheim also scored twice in the victory.  Greg Chase paced Team Grey’s scoring attack with a pair of goals while Beck Malenstyn had a goal and an assist.

Game 3: Team Black 4 Team Red 3
Terrell Draude scored twice, including the game winner, lifting Team Black to the one goal win.  Kenton Helgesen led Team Red in the loss with a goal and an assist

Game 4: Team White 5 Team Grey 3
Radel Fazleev and Pavel Karnaukhov both had a goal and assist to lead Team White’s scoring parade.  Greg Chase had a goal and an assist for Team Grey while Beck Malenstyn had two assists.

The Main Camp roster has now been reduced from 81 players to 62; 35 forwards, 19 defencemen and eight goalies.  They have been split into three teams that will take to the ice tomorrow for the final day of scrimmages.  Monday’s scrimmages, which begin at 10am, are free and open to the public.

Hitmen Main Camp fitness test results

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club opened their 2014 Main Camp with fitness testing Saturday evening at Don Hartman North East Sportsplex (5206 - 68 Street NE).  Over 40 returning players, list players and camp invites were put through a series of tests conducted by Hitmen strength and conditioning coach Sean Hope-Ross.  The top performers in each category are listed below.

155 lbs. Bench Press: Connor Rankin (27 reps)
Full extension Chin-ups to Muscular Failure: Lochlan Morrison (24 reps)
Broad Jump: Ben Thomas (271 cm)
Beep Test: Elliott Peterson (Stage 13)

The 81 players invited to Main Camp, which includes the 38 advancing from Rookie Camp, have been split into four teams and will now take to the ice for two days of scrimmages beginning tomorrow at Don Hartman North East Sportsplex.

All on-ice training camp scrimmages are free and open to the public.

Tickets for individual Hitmen home games on sale now

Calgary Hitmen single game day tickets for the 2014-15 Western Hockey League regular season are now on sale to the general public.

Starting at $17.50 for adults and $12.50 for children (plus convenience fees), tickets are available at Ticketmaster locations and the Scotiabank Saddledome box office for all 36 home games.  You can also order online at www.ticketmaster.ca or by phone at 1-855-985-5000.

Calgary will open their 20th anniversary season at home against the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. To commemorate the milestone, a limited edition throwback jersey that honours the team’s inaugural season and pays tribute to the club’s namesake and one of the original owners, Bret “Hitman” Hart, will be worn for the first time.  Fans can also get a free 20th Anniversary Jersey with the purchase of a Hitmen season ticket.

The home opener will kick off a season-long celebration of two decades of Hitmen hockey.

Other home game highlights include the 20th annual Petro-Canada Teddy Bear Toss on Sunday, December 7 versus Moose Jaw, the Lunar Celebration on Friday, February 13 versus the Saskatoon Blades and Fan Appreciation on Sunday, March 22 against Kootenay.

Calgary’s longest home stand this season spans five games happening on two occasions.  The first is December 5-17 when the Hitmen host Edmonton (twice), Moose Jaw, Kamloops and Kelowna.  The second is January 11-23 when Brandon, Red Deer, Victoria, Regina and Swift Current visit the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Hitmen Training Camp runs Aug 21-26

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club will begin their historic 20th anniversary season in the Western Hockey League this week with the opening of the 2014 Training Camp on Thursday, August 21 at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Over 100 prospects and veterans are expected to attend the six-day camp that will include fitness testing, goalie development and on-ice practices and games.

All on-ice training camp sessions are free and open to the public.

The camp will be highlighted by the annual Calgary Hitmen Intra-Squad game which will be held on Tuesday, August 26 at 7pm.  The contest will be hosted by the Calgary Canucks and played at the Max Bell Centre.  Adult tickets are $5.00, Child tickets are $2.00 with all proceeds supporting the Calgary Canucks Junior A Hockey team.
